Flag Cake

It's become our annual 4th of July tradition.  Sure, it's been done, everyone has made a flag cake and ours is nothing new.  But this is one for the Kid, she looks forward to it every year, and it was her idea to start the tradition in the first place. 

I make the cake, this year it was a very simple chocolate cake (on request of the Kid, I usually make a very simple yellow cake) with a recipe from my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook.  Sugar, flour, baking soda and powder, cocoa, salt, milk, egg, butter (recipe called for shortening, but I don't roll that way), and vanilla. 

For the frosting we used whipped cream, sweetened with sugar and a little vanilla bean paste (why it looks speckled), and then the Kid did the decorations of strawberries and blueberries. 

Simple, easy, and delish, can't get much better than that.
